Hi Howard,
in String Theory, gravity is not confined to the brane which constitutes the universe. But it can propagate in all directions, even transversal to the brane. For an introduction to String theory, see The Official String Theory Web Site. The effect that one may detect the gravity wave that has not propagated along the brane, but through the space transversal to it has been discussed by some authors. This effect contributes to the cosmological constant and brane tension. However, these effects are very small since extra dimensions are compactified at a very small length scale. Therefore, it is difficult to observe effects due to gravitational self-interaction of the brane. As a reference see for example: search for extra dimensions.
I hope this helps you on,
Michael
