Hi Richie,

Lung tissue contain a lot of blood, which makes them redish. If you
remove the blood you end up with a pinkish gray, spongy material. The two
combined is actually a bit purple or a red brown.
A smokers lungs can have black stains of tar, dead tissue and other
deposits. Depending on how heavy a smoker it is, it will be more or less
stained. A city dweller has also more black stains than someone living in
clean air. When the lung is heavily exposed it can get what’s called
emphysema and cancer. In both cases you get big black blotches in the
lung tissue, even sometime turning them more or less completely black.

If you can stomach it, do a google search for pictures with the
words “smokers lung”… It’s not a pretty sight.

Kind regards,

Erik
