Dean,

Risks for any major surgery include those from the anesthetic as well as
from the surgey. A major risk from anesthesia is aspiration of
regurgitated stomach contents. This can cause infection and inflammation
of the lungs and can be fatal. Risks from surgery include blood loss with
the need for a transfusion which could be contaminated or the wrong blood
type. Infection and injury to the bowel or bladder is also possible due to
surgery.

For scheduled, non-emergency, c-sections, the risk are all very low,
probably less than 1 per 1,000. In general, c-sections are easy to do, low
risk, and often save the life of the mother, baby, or both. A hundred
years ago one mother died (from all causes associated with pregnancy) for
every 100-150 live births. The rate now is one maternal death for about
every 5,000 live births.
