I may not be able to quite pinpoint the exact cause. However, a sunbrun
causes the local sensory (pain) receptors to be activated which is
interpreted as pain.

The diurnal pattern of the pain might have a number possible reasons: 1.
change in Clothing, 2.Exposure to chemicals and abrasive surfaces and 3.
lack of activity, thus allowing the person to focus more on the pain than
during the day.

The once above are rather no-scietific, but in the absence of any hard data
I would be quite reluctant to stray any further.

Cheers
S Chakrabarty

PS: Try using a soothing cream (pure milk cream is best), something that
keeps the skin hydrated.
