Well, you did pretty well with your own powers of observation! I see that you referred to a cocoon and you were right. No, they were not ant eggs, but instead were ant cocoons. Ants have complete metamorphosis. This means they go through four stages: the egg, the larvae, a pupae that is encased in a cocoon and the the adult form. Ant eggs are very very tiny and hard to see. The stage you saw was the pupal stage.
