We all know that high LDL is not good, but I want to ask about high HDL. The lab has set a normal range for HDL. If the HDL is outside that range on the high side, what does that mean? How high is "too high?" In other words, what is the acceptable range? If LDL is within the normal range but if HDL is so high, the TOTAL cholesterol will become high. This can be misleading. I understand that one should pay more attention to ratios than to an absolute number. What should people look at - HDL:total cholesterol or HDL:LDL? Please advise. Also, I would like to know what contributes to (extremely) high HDL. Should one do something to change the reading? If yes, how? (Please note LDL is fine.) Thanks.
