Newsprint appears to be bacteriostatic, the process for making paper also
kills many microorganisms that might cause infection. They may however
be present if the newspaper came in contact with something contaminated.
The use of newspaper for this reason, has been thought to be permissable
for incidental food contact.

Fried foods may take up the chemicals in the newspaper, however, most
black ink used in 90% of the daily papers in the US is non-toxic inks;
soy is very common the base for the blank newsprint ink.

Colors may not use soy ink. There does not seem to be much risk in this
practice, with black newsprint. Avoid using colored newsprint. Avoid
using used newspaper that has come in contact with hands, animals, the
environment.
