MadSci Network: Zoology |
This is a good question!
The American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has the help you are looking for on their web page: http://www.aspca.org
Find the site map, at the bottom of the home page, then find Keep your pets home poison safe, under Pet care. There you will find a list of things to avoid feeding your pets, including chocolate and garlic. You will also find information on how to administer first aid to a pet that has injested a poisonous substance.
If you see that your pet has injested a poisonous substance, you should first call your veterinarian (if after hours they should have an alternative number for you to contact). They will help you determine if it is best to induce vomiting. Vomiting can be induced by giving a small amount of hydrogen peroxide, but it is not always recommended, so be sure to contact a veterinarian first!
