No, a duck can't fertilize a chicken egg.  But wouldn't it make a neat creature
if it could?  A chicken that could swim instead of drown, what a blessing!
Some breeds of chickens you can't judge a hen from rooster without a lot of
experience until they are at least six months old.  If one isn't laying is that
old, the odds are you have a rooster in the mix.  Some hens will crow or at
least make an odd screaming sound so it's not the best way to judge.  You might
want to try and find someone in your area that knows about chickens to give you
a hand on sexing as some birds like Rhode Island Reds are more difficult than
others.
