Why are CDs sampled at 44.1 kHz? Why not 44 kHz or 45kHz?

I was wondering why we use the sampling rate of 44.1 kHz? I know about Nyquist
sampling and that humans can usually hear up to 20 kHz, so why not use a
sampling rate of 40 kHz or 41 kHz or 42 kHz etc.?
