extension of life span in mammals?

Upon reading an article published in Science titled: Caloric restriction
promotes mitochondrial biogenesis by inducing the expression of eNOS, the
article explains how caloric restriction (which is known to promote longevity),
induces eNOS expression which is pretty much the precursor of the free radical
gas nitric oxide. If free radical gases are a cause of aging, then why does NO
promote longevity?
