Good day!

Yes, dogs absolutely can hear and understand the word "come". Dogs with a
good basic training should know at least 10 words, such as: sit, stay, lay
down, and leave it (meaning leave it alone).

I live on a farm. We have four dogs. They eat twice a day. In the
afternoon I call them to dinner by yelling: "Who's hungry" and "Come and
Get it" They certainly know what I mean when I call those words.

Sometimes the dogs bark at the horses. When I yell, "Leave it" they stop
and leave them alone. I only use "leave it" for that occasion.

I train horses and teach them voice commands as well, such as: walk, trot,
canter, and whoa. They can also hear and understand these words.

It's all a matter of training. There are many books on the subject. I'm
not familiar with dog trainers, but I know of several horse trainers. Some
of my favorites are:

Monty Roberts http://montyroberts.com/
Linda Tellington Jones www.lindatellingtonjones.com
John Lyons www.johnlyons.com
and
Pat Parelli www.parelli.com

Much of what they teach can be transferred to the dog.

I also found this web link for you on teaching a dog to come: http://www.paw-rescue.org/PAW/PETTIPS/DogTip_ComeCall.html

Good luck in all you do.
