I don't suppose you would be surprised that there are differences of opinion on this! For instance, this page at metafilter indicates that there is no problem with a staple in a microwave, but this page at Wikipedia suggests that fires can start in a microwave if there is a staple in paper. I have never actually tried this, but perhaps you could use a set of several different microwave ovens, put a paper bag with staple, and a teabag with staple, into each and see what happens! There's nothing like doing it yourself!
