I am an 8th grade science teacher.  When teaching thermal expansion I use the 
ball and ring experiment.  After heating the ball for 5 classes the demo stopped 
working.  The ball remained too large to fit through the ring after it was 
cooled.  I use tap water to cool the ball.

Why would it not return to its original volume after being heated then cooled?
