I am an 8th grade science teacher. When teaching thermal expansion I use the
ball and ring experiment. After heating the ball for 5 classes the demo stopped
working. The ball remained too large to fit through the ring after it was
cooled. I use tap water to cool the ball.
Why would it not return to its original volume after being heated then cooled?
