Astrobiology is an emerging field of scientific research, combining aspects of biology, geology and astronomy. It is often defined as: the study of the origin, evolution and distribution of life in the universe. These are big questions!

Some examples of astrobiology research are:

• How did life emerge on Earth?
• What are the most extreme environments that life can tolerate?
• Is there life elsewhere in the universe and how can we detect it?
• Might there be microbial life elsewhere in our solar system, e.g. on Mars?
