I cannot answer this query without seeing a picture.But:
Anything that is buried in sand may be a concretion of some sort.   
Mineral bearing waters circulating through sediment deposit their 
minerals in a cavity. The cavity may be created by organic matter rotting 
away or metal oxidising. More than this I cannot say.
