Dear Thomas,

70 % of the Earth's surface is covered by oceans and seas and more than
half the world's population lives within 60 km of the coast.

Marine biology since its inception has been a topic of great interest to most
biologists, chemists and environmentalists. The contribution of the
marine ecosystem in terms of medicinal, industrial and other relevant
requirements of mankind has occupied a special place in day-to-day life.
There are few paymasters in the field of marine biology. Promotions are generally obtained on the basis
of growth in the industry or research organization. You can refer to the Newscientist 2006-2007 career
guide, which gives the salary package and job descriptions for
individuals in any industry and qualification level.
There are also online resources such as the webpage: http://
www.oceanexpert.net/
that gives insight into diverse marine marine biology careers.
