Well, There have been some efforts to recreate the environment in which life originated. I guess, you are well aware of the famous Miller's experiment. Creating cells in the lab in no big deal, we do it all the time in tissue culturing. But, if you mean a completely artificial cell, with no biological origins, then certainly, I don't see any reason why it should reflect upon the origin of biological cells! Infact, if we want to study the origin of life, we should rather simulate the sort of reduced environment that existed when life originated.
