My mom said that an apple seed will only start growing if it has been frozen
in the fridgid winter. Its reason is to prevent growing for only a bit and
dying. I have a theory of how this works: since the seed has a water content,
the water freezes, squishing, or rupturing (or partially rupturing) the seed;
telling it to grow.
