Diane,
While I agree with most people, I would probably nail it to the tree 
also.  You can take a small chain and attached it to your sign and to the 
spring, keeping it tight enough to keep the sign at the height level you 
want it.  There is a possibility the movement of the sign and chain might 
damage the tree if you do not get it tight enough. Certainly I would 
expect the spring and chain to last for several years.
