I have a temperature probe (vernier)in a test tube with distilled water and 
the test tube surrounded with ice/salt mix.  the temp continues to go down and 
without me taking the whole thing apart to see ice in the test tube I can not 
tell from the data that I have arrived at waters freezing point.
