I don't know about Daphnia specifically, but in Lepidoptera, the heart,
normally subject to strong neural control will beat spontaneously with an
endogenous rhythm if all nervous connections are correctly removed. This
was discovered by T. A. Miller back in the 60's when he was in Scotland. He
is now at UC Riverside. So I'd say arthropod hearts are likely to be
mygenic with a strong neural control of heart beat.
