It might be possible to engineer workers to lack the barbs, but there is a
reason bees only sting once- their poison glands remain attached to the
stinger continuing to pump out venom into the threat. When bees sting, they
are pretty likely to die anyway, even if they could sting more than once,
they'd likely be killed by the victim, so it makes evolutionary sense that
that sting count as much as possible.
