Essentially, printer inks are water-based, with pigments (for color) and 
preservatives added (to keep the water clean and free (of bacteria, mold, 
fungus, etc.).  Usually cartridge inks contain surfactants (for pigment 
stability and wetting) as well as alcohol to aid with drying speed.  
Finally, most inks contain polymers or resins to aid with adhering the ink
