Yes it is possible this will be used one day. It is possible to use adult stem cells to create neurons. At this time getting cells to form the correct neurons and to "connect" themselves into the damaged adult neural tissue is not quite there yet. Looking like a neuron is not necessarily functioning in the network. Optic nerve will be a big challenge since the cells that are your optic nerve are retinal ganglion cells; their cell body is the inner most layer of cells in the neural retina, and their axons ARE your optic nerve and stretch all the way to make synaptic contact with your brain.
