Hi Chris,

While I can’t give you a quantitative answer (such as X dBs is the theoretical limit), I can assure you that non electrical amplification can be quite loud, but often with limited frequency range. There’s a nice discussion of it on this website. Since you mention exponential horns, you may also be interested in checking out this discussion of horn loudspeakers. The horn provides no net amplification itself, merely helping to direct the sound being amplified (by, say, compressed air, for non electrical amplification).
