Hi,

I think the simple answer to your question is that the mathematics for Bose-Einstein condensate, as originally formulated, describe a collection of identical, non-interacting bosons. The collapse and explosion of the Lithium condensate you ask about happens when a critical number of atoms is reached, suggesting that this is the point where the atoms in the BEC begin to interact with one other.

I hope this helps!
