Dear Gene,

In short "a lot." Depending on the field of virology you are in, you might need just moderately advanced algebra, or you might need quite a lot of calculus. Algebra is used for all sorts of lab calculations. Calculus comes in handy for enzyme kinetics and the like. In any area of virology, you'll need to be able to do statistics to analyze your results. My advice is to take the standard math classes in school, and at least a year (better two) of calculus and a statistics course in college. By then, you'll have a better idea of what sort of virology you want to do.
