MadSci Network: Zoology |
I think you guys are great! A while back I asked a question... On a PBS program, probably NOVA or Nat'l Geographic, on the Sleeping Dragon Mountains of China, they spent some time on an animal called the Firefox. My daughter loved this creature and wants to know more about it, and I cannot turn up even a picture. Supposedly a cousin or something to the panda, it is a beautiful creature not found anywhere else in the world, and looks a bit like a racoon with red and white hair. I have searched many places on the web, including Britannica, PBS, the Smithsonian, and sites in the P.R.C. hoping to find something about this creature. So far, nada. Any help? Someone named June kindly posted this reply: http://www.madsci.org/posts/ archives/dec2000/976841399.Zo.r.html - it was a very thorough answer and would have satisfied except that the creature I am speaking of is definitely NOT a fox. Or, should I say, that it is not akin to Canidae, Vulpes or Fulva. I actually saw this creature on the televison program I mentioned. They said that it was a cousin to the Panda, and it was really cool and beautiful looking. It is definitely an almost-undocumented animal, I have searched high and low in textbooks and databases and britannica. There is no mention of this anywhere - but the Nova or Nat'l Geo special had it, I saw it.
