Electrolysis refers to the production of an oxidation-reduction reaction
by means of a direct current.
What does that all mean?
It means that an electrical current (DC) can be applied to a system in
order to force a reaction to occur. In this reaction, there is an
oxidation of one species, and a reduction of another. Think of it as
a battery operating in reverse.
