That bit of fame is claimed by the SR-71 "Blackbird", a reconnaissance aircraft built by Lockheed and operated by the U.S. Air Force for 25 years, retired in 1990, and since then operated by NASA as a research aircraft.
It is capable of flying faster than Mach 3 (over 3300 km or 2100 miles per hour -- that's about 55 km or 35 miles per minute!)
A number of Web pages are available concerning the SR-71; here's a fact sheet from the U.S. Space and Rocket Museum in Huntsville, AL, which has an SR-71 on display.
