Subject: What does the overall reaction order tell us about the reaction?

I know how to calculate the reaction order and that the order with respect 
to each individual reactant tells us the influence that reactant has on the 
rate of the reaction. I don't have a solid understanding of what the 
overall reaction order number tells us, or how this number has significance 
in practise.
