The epithelial lining of the stomach is covered with a thick mucous which 
protects it from the HCl and digestive enzymes in the stomach.  Glycolipids on 
the cell surface also help to protect the cells. However, the cells do get 
digested within about 2 weeks and are constantly being replaced.
