Yes, AC can produce gas.  However, only with DC will the hydrogen
and oxygen bubble separately from the two separate electrodes.  AC 
gives you a combined gas containing both H2 and O2.  This type
of gas must be burned as it is produced.  It is very hazardous 
to store, since it can explode while still inside the tank.
