It is quite possible to build a model of the solar system using some styrofoam balls that one might purchase from a local craft store. However, if you want your model to be realistic, you should make sure you have lots of room. On my Web site, I have the recipe for making a scale model of the solar system. As one can see, if the Earth is modeled as being a sphere 1 cm in diameter, the Sun is a ball 110 cm in diameter located 118 meters away and Pluto is a ball 0.2 cm in diameter located 4638 meters away. (I'll remind you that a football field is about 100 meters away and that there are 1000 meters in 1 kilometer.)
This should not discourage you. It should be possible to model the inner solar system (Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth and Moon, and Mars) around your school. As I said though, it will take lots of room!
