     White spots on the fingernails are caused by small dents in the nail 
itself.  If something hits your nail it can dent the tissue underneath, the 
nailbed.  A small area then gets retracted from the nail, causing a white spot.  
If the trauma is much bigger, the nailbed may bleed underneath, causing a black 
spot.
     There are some diseases which can cause the nail to grow impaired or 
colored, but white spots are not one of them.
