Antoine Lavoisier (1743-1794), the
French chemist who discovered oxygen,
was beheaded during the Reign of Terror
during the French Revolution.

He told a friend that he would
continue blinking for as long as possible after
the guillotine struck. The goal was to find out
how long he would remain conscious.
He blinked for about 15 seconds.
