Sorry to say, but there is no such thing as a true black rose.  
There are several very dark reds which are called black, but their 
true color appears when observed under full light.  

As far as the history behind the black rose, I was not able to find 
anything.  You may look up one of the many web sights for roses for 
more information.

A good sight to start with is the American Rose Society.

They have a really good FAQ with some comments about black and blue 
roses.
