Hi Carolyn,
This is indeed a hard thing to find on the internet! I was able to locate some sites that have the Genome sizes of various vertebrate/invertebrate species and more specific gene information is abundant! It's only the actual number of chromosomes listed at one site that is hard to find. I did post a request to the bionet.gene.chromosome newsgroup but, unfortunately, no one seems to have answered yet. I also emailed a couple of friends that are actively involved in genetics but none knew of any such site, either.
Okay, despite the dismal situation so far, there is a book I can point you to that has this information. It's called The Biology Data Book (more info on this below). Also, the Web is constantly growing and information that wasn't there today will likely be readily available tomorrow. Thus, you might also want to occasionally run your own search on the net looking for cytogenetics or specific terms like that. Below are some links to other sites that have genome information and may be able to point you to other places with even more information. I hope this helps!
Best regards,
Rick.
"This three volume set is filled with specific data on many aspects of biological studies. For example, Volume 1 includes tabular and statistical information on genetics and cytology (such as chromosome numbers and linkage groups for vertebrates and invertebrates), reproduction, and growth and development; vol. 2 covers biological regulators and toxins, environment and survival (temperature tolerance), parasitism, sensory biology and neurobiology; and vol. 3 covers nutrition, metabolism, respiration and circulation, and blood and other body fluids. Some of this information is updated in Geigy Scientific Tables."
