In answer to your question of whether reading in the dark or reading
small print can damage or train the eyes, the answer is no, it will not
damage the eyes. In some cases, under supervision of an optometrist,
vision therapy may incorporate very detailed and fine nearwork that can
potentially allow for better visual acuity or sharpness, thus improving
overall vision. Reading in the dark is simply not a good idea because it
may cause accomodative spasm (blurry images) among other things like
frustration upon not being able to see the words! I don't think there is
any permanent damage sustained to the eyes in either case. It is generally
best to use ambient lighting that is comfortable for you and read letters
that are within your visual range.
I hope this helps! Good luck!
