Subject: Why is spin 1/2 and -1/2

I have been trying to find out why the spin quantum nunber takes on the 
discrete values of 1/2 and -1/2.  I understand why the values are disctete 
(ie. it is required mathematically) but I cannot seem to figure out why 
the why the values are 1/2 and -1/2 specifically.
