This site has a table that gives some data strength of different woods. It says 
balsa wood is one of the strongest woods based on its weight.

Wood can be laminated to greatly increase its strength. You also have to 
consider both weight and strength. 

This site says laminated sugar maple is the preferred wood for skateboards:
