The compounds in beverages which stain teeth are called tannins. These compounds are found in a variety of foods, such as colas, teas, coffees, red wines and dark colored juices, such as grape juices. Tannins make foods and beverages taste astringent (or make your mouth want to "pucker"). They have a brown color in the foods as well as on the teeth. It isn't possible to quantitate the relative extent to which beverages containing tannins stain the teeth, because individual responses vary so widely.
