Genetically, hazel is blue.  Your high school biology is right; there are 
only two eye colors, brown and blue.  The problem is that there is a lot 
of variable expression, a lot of mixing of color.  This is how we get 
green and hazel and why there are so many shades of blue and brown, etc.  
Hazel is basically blue-green.
