A friend found a turtle, approx 14 inches long, crossing the road and brought it to my small 800 gallon pond for my kids to see. One morning i noticed many holes in my perrenial flower bed around the pond. The following morning, the turtle was in the highest, sunniest spot, covered with mosquitoes and sun blaring in her face. She seemed to be struggling, i thought she was dying. So, i tried to help her out of the hole and she made a hissing/snapping sound. I quickly let go and backed off. I called for my husband and kids, and said it was time to relocate the poor thing.. AAfter a happy release into a very large pond, we returned home. The kids investigated the holes and screamed with delight at finding one full of eggs (15-20)about 1 inch across, smooth and round. We gently burried them and put a small cage over the hole. We are in Carlisle MA. and see turtles frequently crossing the roads, but never this big. The mothers back was covered with moss, she had a sort of pointy nose, with eyes close behind. A long tail and very long claws. I cant remember any other distinguishing marks. Can you guess what kind of turtle this is and how long the incubation period is? Thanks for your help.
