The confusion is over the scientific definition of a fruit as a ripened ovary
and the popular definition of fruit as a sweet ripened ovary usually eaten as a
dessert, snack, or juice. The popular definition of fruit includes oranges,
apples, bananas, grapes, peaches, strawberries, etc. but not vegetables.
Vegetable does not have a scientific definition, just a popular one. Vegetables
can be any edible plant part other than a fruit in the popular sense. Not all
edible plants are considered vegetables but are instead placed in other
categories, such as spices, herbs, grains, nuts, and beverages. Vegetables may
be botanical fruits (tomato, pepper, string beans), seeds (dry beans), flowers
(cauliflower, artichoke), leaves (lettuce, celery), stems (asparagus, potato),
or roots (carrot, sweet potato). Gardeners use the popular definition of fruit
so do speak of fruit plants and vegetable plants.
