Hi Alison: I'm sorry about the delay in getting an answer to you - your answer has been forwarded to several MAD Scientists! Seagulls sleep in lots of places, it depends on where they are and what they're doing. If they are maintaining nests and raising young they'll of course sleep in their nests. If they are out at sea (I've observed seagulls several hundred miles offshore) they will sleep on the water, and if they are over land they'll sleep on whatever surface they can find (one out of the way of potential predators of course!).
