Depending on the viewing conditions and the person, the answer seems to be from 25 to 60 Hz ("frames per second"). Below 25 Hz, a movie would appear to be a series of still shots, not a moving picture. Few people can tell the difference if the frame rate is increased above 60 Hz. Movies are run at 24 Hz (under fairly ideal viewing conditions), whereas TV signals come in at 30 Hz. A slightly longer explanation can be found at the URL below.
