I have this idea that the earth's geologic past was much more violent that it is now, based mainly from those illustrations in books depicting the primitive seas surrounded by volcanos and electrical storms. If this is true wouldn't chemosynthesis be a more viable way at starting life than photosynthesis, since all this geologic activity would make it difficult for sunlight to reach the planet's surface plus there would be many more "hotsprings" on the bottom of the sea. This is not really my field (i'm in Physics) but I still think is a good question. I just for my calm my curiosity...
