Hi Charlotte -

Spiders produce silk from glands in their abdomen. All spiders have this ability, though not all spiders spin webs. The silk is one of the strongest filaments in nature, stronger than existing man-made synthetic or metallic fibers.

You can learn more about different species of spiders at the Spider Home Page in Australia. Their site describes some basics of spider anatomy, including the production of silk.
